6 Spring Decorating Ideas

Spring can bring about a change in state of mind; it is a time of hope, renewal, love & positive change (feelings we definitely need to embrace during these current times).  Around your home the first day of Spring inspires us to clean, spruce, freshen & update our interiors & gardens in anticipation of warmer months, spending time outdoors & entertaining.  Following are decorating ideas to bring the feelings of spring into your home.

1.       Introduce pattern & texture by updating your accessories, soft furnishings, bed linen & rugs; consider lighter fabrics for throws, finer pretty lamp shades on your existing base, neutral linens, textured pottery or ceramics & layered table settings.

2.      Colour can lift a space; typically we imagine soft muted tones however if you have a contemporary home you may opt for stronger colours. Think of changing your wall colour with paint or wallpaper to one inspired by our natural surroundings; rich forest green, pumice, buttercream, ocean blues, aqua, desert red, dusty rose, cornflower blue, lilac or lemon.

3.      Do your part for the environment & future generations by decorating consciously & sustainably:

 ·        Take the time to visualise your design direction & create a mood board

·        Think beyond current trends & buy pieces you can see yourself loving for years to come

·        Choose pieces which have some quality & longevity

·        Repurpose, reuse or upcycle items you may already have

·        Select pieces which have been made in Australia by local craftsmen

·        Use recycled, sustainable materials

·        Search antique shops for unique pieces

4.      An obvious spring activity is the traditional ‘spring clean’; it can help clear the mind when you unclutter & tidy cupboards & drawers, donate unused items & create a sense of order.

5.      Soften the harsh Summer sun with window treatments; consider soft flowing sheers curtains to dim the light without blocking it completely & patterned fabric blinds (my favourite) to add an extra classic layer.

6.      Bring the outdoors in with creative organic arrangements of vases or pots of fresh flowers & plants & create a small garden oasis at or around your front door to greet you when you come home. Use textures & tones in your vessels & be creative with vintage troughs, tin buckets, pots & baskets to compliment your overall aesthetic.

Of course, there are plenty of tweaks you can make when decorating for Spring; it may be as simple as updating the mat at the front door, experimenting with different floral or citrus candle scents, update your artwork, display bowls of fruit or have a bedhead custom designed in beautiful fabric.
