Interior Design Style
I was recently asked if I have a signature interior design style; I had to think for a minute & although I mostly design what I call Australian Coastal or Modern Farmhouse style for my clients I am personally drawn to a number of different styles & love to be guided by my client’s preference, the building or home & location. Here are some of my favourite interior styles.
Australian Coastal style is more relaxed than Hamptons, suited to the Australian way of life & taking its cues from the natural environment of sea & land with earthy tones in a casual layered approach. This type of design takes advantage of light, utilising crisp whites, light timbers & texture in a non-cluttered approach to provide a comfortable & easy home to live in.
Modern Farmhouse is one of my favourite styles as it incorporates the old & new with simple, utilitarian & imperfect pieces. Wall panelling, although also used in a coastal style, is a key element to modern farmhouse & the colours though still earthy can be bolder with black accents. You also get to forage old wares stores with this design style; always a good excuse to go away for the weekend on a short country road trip.
Classic interior design exudes a beautiful formal, elegant & timeless feel. I love the grandeur, the structure & balance of placement as well as the richness of accessories & finishes. The symmetrical layout is often focussed around one point in the room such as a fireplace, bay window or beautiful large French doors. The classic furniture is more ornate with inlay or carved features in a darker timber or fabric in tones of yellow, emerald, blue, plum or brown.
Designing for a mid-century home & paying respect to the era & simplicity of times gone by is on my interior design bucket list. This style injects some quirkiness, fun & functional durability to design, with its clean lines, abstract, geometrical patterns, organic curves & large artwork. The colour scheme is often white or neutral walls with bold, colourful accents in tones of burnt sage, tangerine orange, mustard yellow or turquoise.
Another style on my bucket list is to design an industrial warehouse; I find the raw brick walls, huge steel beams, exposed pipes, gorgeous timber floors & massive windows inspiring. Transforming these large warehouse spaces with their obvious raw materials into a cosy home with larger scale lighting, artwork & accessories would be an exciting challenge.
Although our design studio is often commissioned to create coastal, farmhouse or classic styles we have a deep admiration for other design styles & eras. Our clients, their home & location guide the design direction & we take the time at the very start of any project to truly understand our client’s vision, lifestyle & current/future needs to create a unique design for them.
