7 Tips for De-cluttering your Home

Spring is the perfect time to de-clutter your home as we welcome new beginnings, renewed energy, warmer days & changing our decor & fashion to embrace the sunnier seasons.

De-cluttering will help you feel lighter, calmer, more productive & efficient. You will save time by not searching for items, optimise the space you have & shift your mindset towards intentional living.

#1 Know the why!  Why do you want to de-clutter?  Do certain areas make you anxious? Does your home feel claustrophobic?  Are you unable to focus, or sleep? Do you feel drained of energy?  Acknowledging & understanding the “why” will help you be more focused & intent on de-cluttering.

#2 How do you want your home to make you feel?  Think of 3 words which describe the feeling you want your home to manifest, it might be words like calm, well-being, organised, joyful, relaxed, mindful, inviting, focused, energetic, productive. Think of feelings that resonate with you & your family.

#3 Set a goal! What is your goal for de-cluttering? It might be tackling one area once a week, or spending 15 minutes a day, whatever works for your preferences, lifestyle, and is something you believe you can maintain over time.

#4 Don't just tidy & organise!  Make sure you remove any items from your home which don't bring you a sense of happiness or connection. Don’t hold onto items for the sake of it, make sure they hold meaning or usefulness.  If they don't; sell, donate, recycle or repurpose the objects.

#5 Start small!  Think one drawer, one shelf, one small area like an entry.  Don’t stress the big stuff first!  Once you start to de-clutter the small areas it will encourage & motivate you to keep going & set up a regular routine to eventually tackle your whole house.

#6 Focus on the frustration areas! Think about the areas in your home which bring you the most frustration or annoyance, usually it's a space you use on a daily basis or one you look at everyday. Tackle those areas first, it will calm your mind & encourage you to continue de-cluttering your home.

#7 Manage your newly de-cluttered home with a system. Store like with like, group items by activity, make sure you can easily see the items in a cupboard or drawer, use labels if that is your thing.  And, make sure you have a set place for everything & that everyone in the household knows where that is so they get used to storing it there.

Hope these tips help you start to de-clutter & improve the connection you have with your home. We would love to hear how you go & any other tips others will find useful, in the comments below.
