Styling your Sideboard

Sideboards allow you to create a personality for your home, as well as being a practical space to store handy items; they provide purpose & an opportunity for creatively displaying your style.

01 Start with the wall behind your console (unless it is a window!) & add some depth to the zone by hanging or leaning a mirror or piece of art; you could even layer a couple of different sized pieces of art in front of one another. As a general rule of thumb, use 2/3’s of the length of the sideboard.

02 Divide the space ideally into 3 for a larger console or 2 if short in length so that you are creating groups of stories, or vignettes.

03 Anchor the top of the sideboard with taller items such as lamps or large vases or pots which visually layer over the artwork or mirror you have used against the wall. Consider varying the heights & adding complimentary tones & texture for interest.

04 Start to layer & change the dimensions of the sideboard by continuing with varying heights, grouping items & moving pieces forward & back till you get the right balance & cohesion. Use stacks of books to create height for decorative items, trays to anchor a grouping, boxes or baskets for practical storage.

05 Expand beyond the sideboard & style on the floor next to the piece with potted plants, large pots or chairs.

06 Ensure your personality shines through allowing the pieces to tell your story & reflect your style in the rest of the room or house.
